The term "Big Six" or "Big 6" is used in reference to the US airline industry. The "Big Six" airlines are the six largest airlines operating in the United States. As of the late 2000s, these are American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways. American Airlines is the largest airline in the world and all of the Big Six US carriers are among the the world's 15 largest airlines. These companys are also often referred to as the "US legacy" airlines because they are not only the largest airlines in the US but also the oldest. Northwest Airlines is the oldest continually operating airline in the United States having begun operations in 1926.
The Big Six US Airlines is a book on the subject by Geoff Jones published (in paperback form) in 2001.
