On 25 August 2017, two soldiers were injured in a stabbing in Brussels by a man who shouted "Allahu akbar" (Arabic for "God is greatest").[2][3] The case is being treated as a terrorist attack.[1]

Events[edit | edit source]

The attacker, a 30-year-old male Somali immigrant, born in 1987, who authorities say was not known for terrorist activity, was shot and later died of his injuries in a hospital.[1][4][5][6] He arrived in Belgium in 2004 and was granted Belgian nationality in 2015.[7]

The New York Times reported that Brussels had been "on edge" as a result of previous terrorist attacks.[8]

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.[9]

General Marc Thys, commander of Belgian land forces, said that "uniforms are a target" and that his forces will change tactics to adapt to the threat.[10][11]
